The College of Paper-making Engineering back to top

The College of Paper-making Engineering was established, along with the founding of the University, in 1958. (Formerly known as the Department of Light Chemical Engineering.)

Currently, the College recruits students from all over the country at each level of study: doctoral students, graduates and undergraduates. Since its inception, the College has formed a multi-level system, including 200 senior professionals and technical personnel, which consistently contribute to the paper-making industry and society at large.

For the past 40 years, particularly over the past decade, the College has undertaken national research projects and has made a number of major scientific and technological achievements with doctoral graduates and post-doctoral alumni throughout the United States , Canada , Sweden , Finland , Germany , Britain , Japan and other countries. In recent years, the College has achieved success in teacher training, personnel exchanges, international cooperation and laboratory construction, all of which have added to its high reputation both at home and abroad.

Paper-making Undergraduate Education

With emphasis on combining theory and practice, the College attaches great importance to the construction of its brand, majors and curriculum. Meanwhile, it created a complete standardized teaching management system and a teaching quality assurance system. During their study, undergraduates hold three internships, write a graduate thesis design, and job shadow professional engineers.

The College and several well-known multinational companies are closely linked. This partnership provides convenience for teachers who regularly participate in various international conferences, including the International Paper Exhibition. This cooperation also gives the College timely access to the latest information and expertise and original teaching materials to improve students' learning.

The College also focuses on improving students' English proficiency, so the English CET-4 and CET-6 pass rates are among the best at SUST.

The College, formerly known as Silicate Engineering, was established in 1958. This College has one first-level master's program and three second-level programs. The College has the right to grant post-graduate master's degrees and accepts the enrollment of engineering master's degree holders and equivalent graduates. What's more, materials science, materials physics and chemistry offer doctoral degrees.

The College constantly improves students' learning condition and environment. Many domestic and foreign experts are frequently asked to give lectures. At present, the College has established friendly connections with universities and research institutions in countries such as Japan , the United States , Britain , and Australia .

Up to now, the College has trained more than 4,000 undergraduates and 200 graduates. Most graduates have been distributed to the southeast coastal area, Beijing and other urban areas and are making a significant contribution to joint and state owned enterprises.

College Highlights

The Food science and engineering program has been deemed a ¡°key major¡± in Shaanxi province.In recent years, the College has been involved with 86 scientific research projects including eight state natural fund projects, 38 provincial scientific research projects (which won four provincial science and technology awards), and eight national patents for invention.The areas of study include foodstuff processing theory and techniques, foodstuff chemistry, foodstuff nutrition, food safety and quality control techniques, functional food research, modern agricultural products processing, and storage research.

The College of Resources and Environment (formerly the College of Leather ) was established in 1958 and is one of the oldest departments at SUST. The College enjoys a high reputation for its outstanding achievements: over the past 50 years, it has cultivated nearly 7,000 excellent graduates in different fields, and many of them have become experts in a variety of professions.

In its long-running practice, the College has established friendly cooperation with foreign counterparts. The United States , Germany , Australia and France have regular academic exchanges including scholars' visits to the College. The China Leather Industry Association and the German company BASF grant research funds, education funds, and student scholarships that total more than 50 million RMB per year.

College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was established in 1958, which was one of the earliest and biggest colleges at SUST.

Currently, there are 123 staff with 26 professors and 31 associate professors. Among the teaching faculty, 23 staff have doctorate degrees and 47 staff have master's degrees. And there are 137 undergraduates majoring in five different research areas.

Staff

In the College there are more than 2,000 undergraduates, nearly 200 graduate students and 120 teachers, including 13 professors and 31 associate professors (five with doctorates and 62 with master's degrees).

Specialties

The College's main laboratory offers introductory courses as well as advanced courses for professional majors. The College also provides computer training and research opportunities for students and faculty. The lab implements two levels of management systems: the College supports the Shaanxi Electronic Experiment Teaching Center and the SUST Computing Center .

At the department level, there are four professional comprehensive labs, and 15 scientific research labs. The college possesses more than 2,200 teaching and scientific pieces of research equipment which together are worth 12 million RMB.

The College currently has nearly 2,000 undergraduates, 180 graduates and 67 teachers, including 25 senior professors and associate professors.

In recent years, teachers in the School of Management not only focus on teaching tasks but also on research. The quality and quantity of the teacher's published works in core journals have been consistently increasing. Topics include economic management and news, accounting research, and computer science. They have also published two well-known studies: ¡°The Nonlinear Mechanism of Exchange Rate Fluctuations¡± and ¡°The Financial Management of Universities.¡±

The College of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering back to top

The College is one of the earliest professional departments at SUST. Its predecessor is the Chemistry Department of Basic Courses that was formerly established in 1958 and in 1997, two former chemistry colleges merged to form the college's current organization. It was renamed The College of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering in April 2002.  

Now, the College offers doctoral degrees in Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Technology, master's in Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering. Over the past years, the College has fostered a large number of talented graduates.

In the past five years, the college has published more than 700 articles, including 47 in the SCI (Science Citation Index) and 84 in the EI (Engineering Index). Additionally, it has achieved a number of national patents. In recent years, it has undertaken China National Funds for Outstanding Youth projects, National Science Foundation projects and close to 300 other provincial and ministerial initiatives. The College of Art & Design was founded in May 1997 on the basis of the Industrial Design Specialty. Over the next ten years, the College went through multiple name changes until 2006 when it was renamed The College of Art & Design.

Currently, the College has 85 staff, including nine senior professors, nine associate professors, and 32 Lecturers. Among these teaching staff, one was awarded the ¡°Excellent Teacher¡± title and two were awarded the ¡°Advanced Teacher¡± title all at the provincial level. Five percent of the staff have studied abroad to advance their education.

The English department was founded in April 2002. Then in 2007, The College of Foreign Languages and Communications was formed with the additions of the Broadcasting Program and the Television, Editing & Directing Program. Currently, there are 35 classes with more than 1,130 students.

Students in this College are involved in a wide variety of projects. They consistently win the English singing and language competitions, and host a wide variety of organizations and performances.

The broadcasting branch trains students to be successful media professionals, and the program provides practical opportunities for students to apply their skills such as the daily campus announcements.

On the foreign language side, the newly formed English Innovation Center coordinates the Model United Nations Club, English Together Newspaper and the English Debate team for all majors to improve their communication skills.

The College of Science was established in 2002, and evolved from Basic Course Research that was founded in 1958. There is a total of 70 staff in the college with professors and associate professors, and 65 percent of the faculty have master's degrees.
